About the campaign
Most of us believe that the little red standby light uses only a negligible amount of energy, but that's far from the truth.
In the UK, devices left in 'sleep' mode waste about two power stations worth of electricity each year and produce the same amount of carbon as 1.4 million long haul flights.
When you switch a modern electrical appliance off, it rarely actually shuts down. More often it goes into standby mode.
Some well-engineered devices draw just milliwatts of current in standby, while others continue to suck up to 30 Watts from the mains and at the moment, there is no legislation to keep the figure down.
